Canarian hotel owners have complained that the lack of affordable housing is making it impossible for them to find staff to work for them.

According to Jorge Marichal, president of hoteliers federation Ashotel, there are three reasons for the lack of housing: “Failure to build public housing; housing projects sold to vulture funds by promoters following the 2008 crisis, and a move from residential lets to tourist lets.”

“We’re finding it increasingly difficult to hold on to qualified staff because of the price of housing,” said Marichal, “and it’s making it difficult to attract people from outside. Housing on the Canaries is becoming impossible.”
