As we head out of lockdown, freedom to drive has increased, and it’s now almost impossible to be fined for unnecessary travel.

On 10th May, at the beginning of Phase 1, Guardia Civil officers fined nine surfers for driving vans to Famara beach with their boards, reminding them that it was still forbidden to drive vehicles for sporting purposes or to visit beaches. The surfers angrily pointed out that, at the time, it was permitted to travel the length of the island to go to a bar, but not to practice sport.

Entry into Phase 2 has meant that more activities are permitted, including driving to beaches anywhere on the island . The only restrictions apply to leaving the province, something that is impossible on Lanzarote unless you have an amphibious vehicle.
