Arrecife’s official chronicler and ex-Cabildo President Antonio Lorenzo Martín died yesterday on Lanzarote at the age of 92.

A lawyer by training, Lorenzo was the first President of the Cabildo to be elected after the return of democracy, serving from 1979 to 1983 as part of the Union for the Democratic Centre party (UCD).  During this period, he initiated the project that would result in the construction of Lanzarote’s General Hospital.

Lorenzo was also a writer who published three volumes of reminiscences about the Arrecife of his youth and wrote hundreds more articles for local publications. He was the perfect host to the Gazette’s editor when we interviewed him at his home in El Cable a few years ago.

The Cabildo has declared three days of official morning during which public acts will be suspended and flags flown at half-mast.

At this publication, we would also like to extend our condolences to Don Antonio’s family.
