Canarian Government Advances Mácher Solar Farm Despite Local Opposition

The Canarian Government has declared a proposed field of solar panels in Tìas “of general interest”, overruling previous objections by the local Ayuntamiento and Lanzarote’s Cabildo.

The classification “of general interest” allows projects to go ahead “subject to a special regime” without the need to obtain a building permit or any other municipal or insular preventive control act.

The project envisages 1,680 solar panels covering an area of 24,000 square metres in Mácher, and would require the appropriation of 36 plots of land. The solar farm would be operated by the private Madrid-based company RS Iberia 23, SL.

Tías Ayuntamiento, which claims the development would “irreversibly damage the landscape of Tías” and the Cabildo have a month to lodge objections to the new classification.
