Playa de La Francesa on La Graciosa has been awarded a Black Flag by the Ecologists In Action ecological association.
The Black Flag awards are intended to highlight conservation issues and the choice of La Francesa is more a reflection of the changes that are taking place on La Graciosa as a whole, which received 103,000 visitors in the first three months of this year.
La Francesa lies on the south coast of La Graciosa, between Caleta de Sebo and the Montaña Amarilla. Ecologists in Action claim it is visited “several times daily” by sailing tours, and that “neither the beach, nor the island, are what they once were.”
“Uncontrolled tourism has turned what was an idyllic place into just another noisy and crowded beach,” said the group, highlighting the amount of speeding jeep-taxis and yachts playing music at loud volume.
The association is proposing a quota of tourists and boats that can visit La Graciosa.
