Arrecife Mayor Yonathan de León has announced the long-awaited re-opening of the Argana Alta Sports Pavilion, which has been closed for thirteen years.
Located behind the Chamber of Commerce, the sports centre was originally “opened” in 2007 by then-Mayor Isabel Deniz, as part of her electoral campaign. It did not open its doors for another ten months, however, and was closed five years later after it was revealed that it had no operating licence and there were structural faults in the building. The immense building has remained closed since then, and a generation of children in Argana have grown up without ever having set foot in it. .
Deniz was sentenced to ten years prison last year on corruption charges, some of which related to the sports centre.
De León announced the re-opening over social media and said that the precise date of the ceremony will be confirmed this week.
