A 62-year-old woman was evacuated by helicopter after suffering a fall and breaking a leg at the Caldera Blanca yesterday.

Emergency services received the call at 2.10 pm and, once having arrived at the scene, mobilised the emergency helicopter

This is at least the fifth rescue on the Caldera Blanca route this year. All the other incidents have involved women aged 60+ who have been evacuated after suffering falls, usually presenting a fracture or sprain of the ankle.

The accidents usually occur on the narrow path leading up to the rim of the volcano, or the rim itself. We’d advise anyone thinking of taking the walk to wear strong footwear with ankle support, and a walking stick or poles can come in very useful.
