The Escena Lanzarote Festival will return for its sixth edition with an international programme of dance, theatre and contemporary performance, staged in the unique natural surroundings of Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes. The programme brings together artists from the Canary Islands, mainland Spain and overseas, with performances running from November 2026 to May 2027.
The Escena Lanzarote Festival is a performing arts event organised around the natural auditoriums at Lanzarote’s Centres for Art, Culture and Tourism (CACT). The venues, created by César Manrique, provide the setting for productions that combine artistic performance with the island’s volcanic landscape and distinctive architecture.
The festival takes inspiration from Manrique’s vision of bringing art and nature together, offering audiences the opportunity to experience dance, theatre and music in some of Lanzarote’s most recognisable cultural spaces.
Now in its sixth edition, the festival has developed an increasingly international programme, bringing together established performers and emerging artists. Its productions explore themes including identity, memory, freedom, relationships and transformation, using movement, music and physical theatre to communicate beyond language barriers.
The programme also aims to strengthen the relationship between culture and tourism, allowing residents and visitors to share performances in venues that form part of Lanzarote’s cultural heritage.

The festival opens with Verne, a production by Murcia-based company Onírica Mecánica, which invites audiences to explore the world of adventures imagined by Jules Verne.

The production revisits the spirit of Verne’s novels, with their themes of travel, discovery and invention, encouraging audiences to embrace imagination rather than pessimistic visions of the future.
The performance contains no spoken words, relying instead on visual imagery and the audience’s interpretation of what unfolds on stage.
Verne formed part of Teatralia 2026, with performances at Teatros del Canal, before being programmed by the National Drama Centre at the Teatro Valle-Inclán, where performances sold out. The company has a twenty-year history.

Set against a world facing catastrophe, the performance presents an escape, a transition and a confrontation with something resembling death.
Movement, speech, music and physical presence combine to tell the story of a community facing the void and searching for a way forward. Mascherin expands his exploration of falling into a collective experience, incorporating references to science fiction.

13 March 2027: Peces Borrosos
8.00pm | Jameos del Agua Auditorium | 60 minutes | For adult audiences

Peces borrosos (模糊的魚) brings together artists from Tenerife and Taiwan in a dance production exploring connection, interdependence and the relationship between individuals.
Inspired by the symbolism of Pisces, represented by two intertwined fish symbolising infinity, the choreography draws on the idea that one cannot exist without the other: ‘the fish helps the water and the water helps the fish’.
The dancers move through flowing sequences inspired by waves and schools of fish, creating a collective choreography that explores vulnerability, empathy and transformation.
The production celebrates the beauty that can emerge from blurred forms and shared movement, inviting audiences to consider the connections that unite people.
It is a co-production between the Canary Islands and Taiwan, developed by Carmen Fumero and Taiwanese company Chang Dance Theatre. The work premiered in September 2025 at the Symphony Hall of the Tenerife Auditorium.
The cast includes Dácil González, winner of the 2019 National Dance Prize.

20 March 2027: El Pájaro de Fuego
8.00pm | Jameos del Agua Auditorium | 100 minutes, including a 20-minute interval | For adult audiences

London City Ballet brings a programme of works celebrating the history and contemporary development of dance to Lanzarote.
The company, twice winner in a row of the National Dance Award for Best Independent Company, presents four works connecting influential choreographers of the 20th century with today’s performers.
The programme begins with Ashley Page’s Mephisto Waltz, a display of classical virtuosity set to music by Johann Strauss II.
This is followed by Jerome Robbins’ Quiet City, an atmospheric work accompanied by Aaron Copland’s score. Christopher Marney has revived the production almost four decades after its last performance, following a detailed process of research and reconstruction.
Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto – Second Movement then explores the concentration and vulnerability of dancers before they take to the stage.
The programme concludes with Glen Tetley’s The Firebird, a Gothic reinterpretation of Stravinsky’s classic. Revived by London City Ballet to mark the centenary of the choreographer’s birth, the production explores rebellion, identity and freedom.
Together, the works celebrate choreographic heritage while introducing it to new generations of audiences.

3 April 2027: Este Himno Llevará la Palabra Euforia
8.00pm | Jameos del Agua Auditorium | 70 minutes | For adult audiences

La Intrusa celebrates its 30th anniversary during the 2026/27 season with Este Himno Llevará la Palabra Euforia, a production reflecting on three decades of artistic work.
The company describes its journey as one marked by both difficulty and joy, shaped by the people it has encountered, the experiences it has shared and the lessons it has learnt along the way.
The new production, titled Euphoria, brings together seven artists in a stage performance combining physical movement, emotion, symbolism and music.
Rather than being based on hope, the company describes the work as an anthem driven by impulse and a desire to go beyond established limits.
It aims to celebrate the vital impulse and the importance of collective support, presenting the idea that an anthem is something that cannot be sung alone.

22 April 2027: Hatched Ensemble
8.00pm | Jameos del Agua Auditorium | 70 minutes | For adult audiences

South African choreographer Mamela Nyamza presents Hatched Ensemble, an expanded version of her autobiographical solo work Hatched, originally created in 2007.
The original production drew on Nyamza’s experiences as a mother, a woman and a classically trained ballet dancer. This new version develops those themes through a group of ten dancers.
The performance brings together Western classical dance conventions with South African song, music and physical traditions.
Pointe shoes, traditional ballet techniques and references such as Saint-Saëns’ The Swan appear alongside movements and voices that challenge established conventions.
The production examines the relationship between training, identity, gender and belonging, exploring how individual dancers can reinterpret traditions and develop their own identity on stage.

15 May 2027: Trama
8.00pm | Jameos del Agua Auditorium | 60 minutes | Suitable for all audiences

The festival concludes with Trama, a production exploring group dynamics, relationships and the rules that allow people to live and work together.
Conceived as a concert, the performance uses the different voices, harmonies and discordant notes of a musical ensemble as a starting point for its choreography.
The performers describe themselves as a group, a band and a gang, intertwining bodies and relationships to create a physical score based on interdependence and mutual trust.
The production examines agreements and disagreements, shared balance, disorder and the tensions that emerge within groups, moving between individual actions and collective movement.
Trama offers a reflection on the complexities of working and existing together, including the differences and difficulties that shape collective relationships.
