83 people may have died on a cayuco (wooden fishing boat) boat that was intercepted yesterday south of the Canary Islands.
A marine rescue vessel, the Urania, located the boat yesterday with 44 survivors and five dead bodies on board. However, the Caminando Fronteras NGO claims that 83 people, including three women and a baby, had died earlier.
The boat left a location in the Gambia on August 6th and had been at sea for almost four weeks,
The survivors were taken to the port of Arguineguín in Gran Canaria. The bodies could not be recovered owing to rough seas.
