MMA fighter Hecher Sosa officially opened this year’s Fiestas de San Ginés in Arrecife last night.

The bantamweight UFC contender said “This island made me, Arrecife made me” in a speech in which he reminisced about walking around the Charco de San Ginés with his mother and playing on the Puente de las Bolas with friends.

“Living in a small place doesn’t mean having small dreams” said Sosa, who stressed that behind the bright lights, the interviews and the big fights there was always “a kid from Arrecife”.

The Fiestas de San Ginés have always been one of the most important summer celebrations on Lanzarote, and will continue until 25th August, with events every day at the Parque José Ramírez Cerdá, Playa Reducto, The Plaza de las Palmeras and the Recinto Ferial.

This year’s highlights include a concert by Pablo Alborán this evening (Saturday 15th) at the Recinto Ferial at 9pm

David Bisbal will headline the big final concert, also at the Recinto Ferial, on 25th August.
