The Canarian Government has placed emergency services on pre-alert for tomorrows partial solar eclipse.
The pre-alert is intended to tackle possible increases of traffic and gatherings in places where people go to view the eclipse, which will take place between the hours of 7 pm and 8.45 pm on Wednesday evening.
The risk of wildfires is also being taken into account on the western islands. Lanzarote has few areas where wildfires are likely, although the only forest fire recorded on the island, at the Peñas del Chache on Famara clifftop a few years ago, took place in one of the best spots to view the eclipse.
Anyone wishing to see the eclipse is advised to wear special sunglasses. The Spanish government has issued two million sets of the glasses to the ONCE lottery organisation, which will be given out with the purchase of a ticket.
Free glasses will also be handed out at the meeting on La Santa’s promenade, which has been organised by the Elder Science Museum of Gran Canaria.
It is also worth enquiring at chemist’s shops (farmacias) or opticians., and we have heard reports that ALDI supermarkets are selling the glasses for around €1.50.
