Lanzarote’s New Composting Plant Takes Shape at Zonzamas

Construction of Lanzarote’s new composting plant at the Zonzamas Waste Complex is progressing on schedule.

The facility, which broke ground in June, is expected to be completed by April 2027. Once operational, it will be capable of processing 4,375 tonnes of organic waste each year, helping to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill while producing compost for reuse.

This week, Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort, Vice President María Jesús Tovar, and Councillor for Waste Management Domingo Cejas visited the site to inspect the ongoing works.

Betancort described the project as a major investment in the future of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

“This plant is a key piece of infrastructure for the present and future of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. We are modernising the Zonzamas Environmental Complex so it can meet today’s environmental challenges with more efficient waste management and a stronger focus on the circular economy,” he said.

The project carries a total price tag of €6.3 million.

The new facility will be designed to handle separately collected organic waste from across the island, as municipalities expand food waste collection schemes. Around 875 tonnes of biodegradable material from parks and gardens will also be processed annually and used during compost production.

The plant will include dedicated areas for receiving and preparing waste, featuring equipment such as bag-opening machines, a trommel screen, and a pruning shredder. The material will then pass through fermentation, refinement and maturation stages before being turned into compost suitable for reuse.
