Puerto del Carmen’s Fiestas de Carmen celebrate their big concert tonight when Spanish star Bustamante performs at the Plaza de Varadero in the Old Town.
In 2001, David Bustamante was the first ever contestant on Spain’s talent show Operación Triunfo, coming third in the final. He has gone on to become one of Spain’s favourite singers, with eleven albums and millions of sales. He will take the stage tonight in Puerto del Carmen at 9.30 pm.
At the same time tomorrow, on Friday 7th August, the group Bohemia will headline an evening of more traditional folk music.
The mass that traditionally precedes the maritime procession is scheduled to begin at 11 am on Saturday 8th August at the Church in the Old Town. After the mass, the image of the virgin will be carried to the harbour and paraded at sea, accompanied by several small fishing boats. An evening of live performances and DJs will then take place at 6pm until the early hours at the Plaza de Varadero.
On Sunday morning, at 11 am, the regatta of jolateros will begin. The small tin boats are made from oil drums and paddled with bare hands, pieces of wood or flip-flops. This competition will take place at Playa El Poril, the tiny beach beneath the Puerto Bahia restaurant.
Another mass and procession will take place on Sunday evening at 7pm, followed by another concert (at the Plaza de Varadero) and a firework display at 11 pm.
The fairground located in the harbour area will remain open every day until Sunday evening.
