After almost two years of delays, work on Playa Blanca’s long-awaited sports arena and indoor swimming pool complex is set to move forward following approval of an additional €4 million to complete the project, Canarias7 reports.
Construction came to a halt after the council was forced to terminate its contract with Levantina Ingeniería y Construcción when the company entered bankruptcy proceedings. Since then, local authorities have spent months assessing the unfinished infrastructure and identifying the work required before construction could resume.
Mayor Óscar Noda confirmed that the funding has been secured through surplus municipal funds earmarked for sports facilities. With the necessary administrative procedures now completed, the council expects to launch the tender process between the end of July and early August.
If the planned schedule is maintained, the contract could be awarded during the final quarter of 2026. Construction is expected to take at least eight months, meaning the sports complex is unlikely to open before the summer or autumn of 2027.
Additional Improvements Planned
The new contract will cover completion of all unfinished work left by the original contractor, as well as repairs to defects uncovered during technical inspections.
The council also intends to enhance the original design by adding a children’s playground, a covered multi-sports court, and reviewing the site’s parking arrangements.
Facilities to Be Managed by Yaiza
Because the sports hall and swimming pools share heating and cooling systems, the project will be tendered as a single contract rather than in separate sections. Once completed, the entire complex will be managed directly by Yaiza Council.
Located on a large municipal behind Playa Blanca’s bus station, the complex has been designed to offer easy access by both public transport and private vehicle.
The development includes three swimming pools, one of them measuring 25 metres, alongside a sports hall, gymnasium, activity rooms, and changing facilities.
The project was originally awarded more than five years ago with a total budget of almost €8 million.
