Lanzarote lit up with an estimated 200 San Juan bonfires last night as the island celebrated the traditional midsummer rituals.
The smell of woodsmoke filled the air and glowing fires could be seen in several parts of the island as the fires were lit, usually with an effigy named Don Facundo propped on the top.
As usual the celebrations were especially exciting in Haría, whose patron saint is San Juan. There, the Devils of Haría showed off their new costumes as they put on the usual thrilling spectacle.
Several traditions exist on San Juan, such as writing wishes on a piece of paper and throwing them on the bonfire; leaping over the flames for luck and taking a dip in the sea on San Juan’s Day
Today is a public holiday in Haría.
