German tourism to the Canaries is being threatened by inflation and the high price of flights, with some travel associations warning that “the age of budget flights is over”.
La Voz de Lanzarote reports that the German Association of Independent Travel Agents (VUSR) has recommended that travellers take alternative means of transport to flying, such as car, bus or train – a choice which would negatively affect the Canaries, which rely almost 100% on air connectivity.
Meanwhile, the DRV (German Travel Association) has warned that high airport taxes and financial pressure are raising fares and threatening connectivity.
German tourism to Lanzarote has fallen by around 20% in the ten years from 2015 to 2025. Germany was Lanzarote’s second most important overseas market after the United Kingdom for decades until recently, but has now been beaten into third position by Ireland.
