Lanzarote’s water supply system is “completely broken”, said Oswaldo Betancort, President of Lanzarote’s Water Consortium, yesterday after taking possession of the services that have been operated by Canal Gestión since 2013.
“The challenge is to halt the continuous water cuts,” said Betancort, while assuring that employees of Canal Gestión – “now employed by the Water Consortium” – that no jobs were at risk.
“We are tackling a problem that Lanzarote has been suffering from for many years with responsibility, motivation, and enthusiasm,” Betancort said. “We have spent two and a half years trying to solve this problem and the solution has been the termination of the contract and a public takeover of the entire water system”.
Betancort stated that Lanzarote’s water supply would be “100% public” before next year’s council and Cabildo elections.
