Celebrations have already begun to celebrate Canary Day on 30th May. This is when all eight Canary Islands celebrate the identity of the islands with folk music, dancing, games and activities, local food and, of course, wine.
Some of the highlights of the weekend are as follows:
In Costa Teguise, tonight (Thursday 28th May) will see a free concert by folk group Acatife in the ampitheatre at Playa Cucharas at 8 pm.
On Saturday 30th, there’ll be children’s activities in the Celeste Apartments car park, and another concert in the Pueblo Marinero, where the Parranda la Aldaba will perform at 7 pm.
In Puerto del Carmen, the main event will take place in the Plaza del Varadero on the evening of Friday 29th. There’ll be traditional games from 4pm to 6pm, craft workshops from 5 pm to 8 pm, Zumba at 5 pm, Canarian wrestling at 6 pm and Canarian bowls at 7 pm. The music will begin at 7.30, with performances by Gaida, Gúerma and Achamán the evening will end with an open-air dance.
Yaiza will host the annual Cheese and Goat Fair in the Plaza de Alameda, from 10 am to 8pm on Saturday and 10 am to 7 pm on Sunday.
There’ll be live music, food tasting, show cooking and children’s activities on both days, at an event which will be well worth making an extra effort to attend.
Arrecife’s celebrations will take place in the Parque José Ramiréz Cerda on the seafront, and in the Plaza de las Palmeras, on Saturday and Sunday. In the park, there will be traditional folk music groups (parrandas) and workshops and food stalls. The evening program includes performances by loca timple maestro Benito Cabrera, José Manuel Ramos, and Los Campesinos. On Sunday afternoon, the legendary Canarian folk group Los Sabandeños will perform.
In the Plaza de las Palmeras, there will be traditional maize soup (caldo de millo) and various musical acts, including Latín Dúo, Los Coquillos, and Kódigo 4, among others, concluding at midnight.
Tinajo will also see plenty of music and food, mostly around the church of los Dolores, where there’ll be games, food and olive music from folk groups on Friday evening from 5 pm until the early hours. be a vintage car display. The celebrations will continue of Saturday, with a vintage car exhibition, bowls competitions and much more food and music.
