Four wineries from Lanzarote are representing the island at the first edition of WINEMAD, an international wine fair taking place at IFEMA Madrid from 27th to 29th May.

The Lanzarote wineries taking part are Los Bermejos, Casa Althay, Vulcano Lanzarote and Erupción. They are participating with the support of the Canary Islands Government as part of a wider initiative to promote Canarian wines in international markets.

A 48-square-metre exhibition area has been organised to showcase wines from across the archipelago. Seven additional wineries from Tenerife and La Palma are also attending the event.

During the opening ceremony, the Canary Islands Government’s Minister for Agriculture, Narvay Quintero, said the fair offers a valuable opportunity for Canarian producers to strengthen their international presence and create new business links.

WINEMAD brings together importers, distributors, and major retailers from Europe, the Americas and Asia. Organisers expect more than 4,000 professional visitors and around 200 international buyers to attend.

Quintero highlighted export figures for Canarian wines, which reached 177,443 litres last year. Around 74% of exports were sent to countries outside the European Union, with the United States being the largest market, followed by Canada, China and Japan. Significant exports also went to the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

Industry professionals from countries including Canada, the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Switzerland, China, Japan and Singapore are attending the fair.
