British bakery giant Greggs is set to open its first-ever store in Spain later this month, giving holidaymakers the chance to grab a famous sausage roll before flying home.
The new outlet will open in the departures area of Tenerife South Airport and marks Greggs’ first international expansion in nearly 20 years. The company’s last overseas stores were in Belgium back in 2008.
Greggs is partnering with Lagardère Travel Retail for the launch, which the company says will act as a test for expanding the brand abroad.
Alongside popular UK favourites including sausage rolls, hot bakes, sandwiches and sweet treats, the Tenerife branch will also feature Spanish-inspired menu items such as a Spanish Omelette Roll.
The Newcastle-founded bakery chain said Tenerife South Airport was the ideal location due to its huge number of British visitors. Around half of the airport’s 13 million annual passengers are from the UK.
Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie said the move was “an exciting milestone” for the company.
“Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of UK and international passengers each year, making it the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting,” she said.
“We’re confident our great-value offering will resonate just as well under the Spanish sun as it does on the UK high street.”
Javier Cagigal, chief executive of Lagardère Travel Retail Spain and Portugal, said the partnership would offer travellers “a familiar, comforting choice” before their flights home.
The bakery is set to open in the coming weeks.
