Tinajo will once again celebrate Canary Day with an extensive programme of cultural, sporting and family activities under the theme “Tinajo, Land of Tradition.” The celebrations, organised by Tinajo Town Hall in collaboration with the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Government of the Canary Islands, will take place mainly in Plaza de Los Dolores and are designed for both residents and visitors.
The festivities begin on Friday, 22 May, with the traditional raising of the Canarian flag outside the Church of Los Dolores. Later that afternoon, the Municipal Theatre will host the third edition of the Nasas International Short Film Festival.
Activities continue on Sunday, 24 May, alongside the weekly Farmers’ Market. At 11:00am, children can enjoy Stories with a Canarian Soul by Lorena Curbelo, followed by family workshops celebrating Canarian traditions until 1:00pm. At midday, acclaimed performers Olga Cerpa and Mestisay will headline the Canary Day Concert.
On Thursday, 28 May, Plaza de Los Dolores will host literary events including the presentation of Los enviados del mar at 7:00pm and Destiladera, Lanzarote Revelado at 8:30pm.
The main celebrations begin on Friday, 29 May, with the Los Dolores fairgrounds opening at 4:30pm. Traditional games and workshops, including salto del pastor and other popular Canarian pastimes, will run from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. At 6:00pm, visitors can enjoy Degustando Tinajo, a tapas fair showcasing local produce, before the 7th Félix Morales Fernández Memorial Regional Bola Tournament starts at 7:30pm. Evening entertainment includes performances by Tingafa, Mujeres del Volcán, A.C. Sondemar and Cuarteto Alegranza.
Celebrations continue throughout Saturday, 30 May, beginning with the Don Benjamín Curbelo Perdomo Memorial vintage car exhibition at 11:30am and a community rosette-making activity in César Manrique Park. Children’s entertainment, puppet shows, inflatables and live music will continue throughout the day. Performers include the Tinajo Music School, Peña San Roque Band, AMC Timbayba and a series of traditional parrandas lasting into the night, ending with the Swing Group at midnight.
The programme concludes on Sunday, 31 May, with more traditional sports and cultural activities. The wooden bola tournament resumes, while author Fefo Nieves will present his book Traditional Cuisine of Lanzarote at 11:00am. Musical performances by A.F. Los Campesinos begin at midday, followed by workshops and exhibitions dedicated to Canarian wrestling, traditional games, clay engraving, cochineal art and flag-making.
As in previous years, the event will also feature a competition for the best Canarian-themed table setting, rewarding creativity, originality and the use of traditional cultural elements.
