The ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, and the resulting disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, are beginning to affect airline operations and ticket prices across Europe.

After low-cost carrier Volotea announced a policy allowing ticket prices to rise in line with fuel costs, another airline operating routes to Lanzarote has now introduced similar surcharges.

Volotea, which connects Lanzarote with several French airports and Asturias and offers a weekly capacity of 516 passengers, can now apply an additional fee of up to €14 per passenger on each leg of a journey if fuel prices increase.

Transavia has followed suit. The Air France-KLM Group’s low-cost airline, which operates four weekly flights between Lanzarote and Paris, three to Amsterdam and three to Eindhoven, is now adding a fuel surcharge of around €10.

The airline says the fee is being added on top of the base fare to help offset rising fuel costs. Reports indicate that the surcharge is being applied dynamically, with the amount varying depending on the route and the time of booking.

Transavia has also confirmed a reduction in its flight schedule, announcing a 2% cut in operations.

Not all airlines are taking the same approach. EasyJet, which carries more than 10,000 passengers each week between Lanzarote and destinations in the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Switzerland, has stated that it will not introduce fuel surcharges despite rising oil prices.
