Susana Pérez, head of Lanzarote’s Tourist Federation, has expressed concern about the effects of price rises caused by the war in Iran on holiday bookings.

Interviewed on Radio Lanzarote, Pérez said that, after a good winter and Easter period, April was unlikely to reach 80% occupancy, and May could be as low as 70%. “We’re receiving one booking for every five that we handled last year,” she pointed out.

Pérez added that the drop in bookings was largely due to Lanzarote’s most important market, the UK. “Bookings from the British market are paralysed,” she said. “This is a country that has never given up on its holidays during the uncertainty of recent years.”

“I’m not saying things won’t change in the next couple of months, but the current situation is absolute containment of British bookings.   If this doesn’t change, we could enter a period of crisis,” she warned.
