The Lufthansa Group has confirmed it will cancel 20,000 flights between now and October, a move designed to save 40,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel after the price of kerosene doubled following the US/Israel war on Iran.
The German aviation giant said the majority of the axed services are short-haul routes operated by its regional subsidiary, CityLine. The cuts are being rolled out across the group’s six main hubs: Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels and Rome.
While Lufthansa itself does not operate direct flights to Lanzarote, the airline does offer connections to the island through other carriers within the group, including Brussels Airlines and Discover Airlines. To date, Lanzarote has not appeared on any of the published cancellation lists.
According to the Lufthansa Group, 120 flights are being scrapped each day. The first routes to be cut include flights from Frankfurt to two destinations in Poland, as well as a third route to Norway.
In a statement, the company confirmed that its medium-term route planning for the coming months is now being revised to reflect the reduced capacity. The updated schedule is expected to be published in late April or early May.
