The project to widen the LZ-40 road from the airport to Puerto del Carmen is underway, Canarian Public Works Minister Pablo Rodríguez confirmed yesterday.

After receiving an environmental report in December, a blueprint for the actual works is now being drafted, after which the project will be put out to tender. Earlier this year, Rodríguez indicated that the bidding process would not be opened until the last quarter of 2026, meaning that roadworks are unlikely to begin before 2027.

Rodríguez also announced that the Canarian Government was seeking an alternative to the LZ-5 project, which would have involved building a brand-new main road connecting the airport to Arrecife. The new road would have been situated behind the current industrial zone of Playa Honda, but Rodríguez stated that there had been “no consensus” with island authorities.

He said that parts of the project may still be under consideration, such as a new access road to the hospital, but that a “different” project to the LZ-5 would be sought.

When asked if this could involve the burying of the LZ-2 in Playa Honda, which has been proposed as the most environmentally-friendly option, Rodríguez said “If that idea is agreed on, then yes.”
