All open-air activities on Lanzarote today and tomorrow have been cancelled as the island prepares for the arrival of Storm Emilia, which will bring rain and poor weather to the Canary Islands tonight and tomorrow.
Spain’s weather agency, AEMET, has issued yellow warning for rain and storms on Lanzarote on Saturday 13th December, with rainfall of 15 mms an hour predicted. This has caused the Cabildo’s Emergency Department to activate its emergency plan, cancelling open air activities from 5 pm today (Friday 12th).
Costa Teguise market, the opening of Arrecife’s Navilan Christmas Fair and several sporting fixtures are among the events that have been cancelled.
An orange warning for rough seas is also in place on Saturday, with Force 8 winds and waves reaching 7 metres in height. The northern coasts of the island will be the worst affected and it is highly recommended not to go swimming, fishing, venturing onto piers or breakwaters or walking too close to the sea while the alerts are in force.
Current indications suggest that the storm will have passed by Sunday, although a yellow alert for rough seas will remain in place.
