Official flags in Arrecife will fly at half-mast for three days following the death of Félix Hormiga, one of Lanzarote’s most important writers and historians.
Born in Arrecife in 1951, Hormiga published his first play in 1988 and went to write several stories, plays, children’s books and poems. Non-fiction books such as “Lanzarote Before César” and his lavish biography of Jesús Soto are vital resources for anyone studying Lanzarote.
Hormiga was also active in the cultural life of the capital, as director of the Casa de Cultura Agustín de la Hoz and the Cabildo’s Publications Department, and a member of the board of El Almacén arts centre.
Tributes to Hormiga, who died have been made by the Cabildo, Arrecife Ayuntamiento and all major political parties, with many more to come.
Félix Hormiga was officially nominated as a “Favoured Son” of Arrecife in October – the highest honour the city can bestow.
