Lanzarote’s Cabildo has unanimously approved a motion to turn the island into an Island Climate Laboratory.
All parties approved the proposal, which envisages turning Lanzarote into a space for innovation, research, and action against climate change. The project would acknowledge the island’s position as a vulnerable territory but also recognise its enormous potential to lead sustainable solutions.
Councillor Armando Santana stressed that “the island has unique strengths: a recognized track record in landscape conservation thanks to the legacy of César Manrique, citizens committed to the environment, and huge potential in renewable energies, water management and sustainable mobility.”
The first step will be the creation of an Island Strategic Plan for Climate Innovation, with projects in renewable energies, agroecology, water management, clean transport, regenerative tourism, and training in green employment.
An Island Climate Coordination Board would also be established to attract European funds and collaborate with international organizations such as UNEP, IRENA and WMO.
“Lanzarote has the opportunity to be an international benchmark in sustainability. The fact that all parties have agreed on this vision demonstrates that the climate emergency requires unity, commitment, and vision,” said Santana.
