Today is a public holiday on Lanzarote in honour of the island’s patron, Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes.

Thousands of islanders made the pilgrimage to the church dedicated to the virgin in Mancha Blanca on Saturday, and the event has been hailed as a huge success, with Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort describing it as “an example of civility, co-existence and shared identity, a reflection of the pride of belonging to our community and the tradition that unites us”.

Celebrations will continue today with a solemn mass at midday, and the fiestas will close with a performance by local singer-songwriter Rosana Arbelo at 9 pm.

It is also the last chance to attend the impressive craft fair in the square at Mancha Blanca, which will be open until 9.30pm.
