A bench painted with the colours representing the LGBT+ community in Punta Mujeres has been vandalised with a large swastika and the words “viva Vox”.

The bench was unveiled on June 17th as part of the municipality’s Pride celebrations.

Montse Cedrés, president of Lánzate (LGBT+ Association of Lanzarote & La Graciosa), stated: This bench was inaugurated in June as a symbol of respect and institutional commitment to LGBT+ rights. Turning it into a canvas of hate is an offense to the memory of those who fought before us and a reminder of why we must continue to defend our spaces. Lanzarote is a diverse island, and we will not allow fear and intolerance to erase what we have achieved.”

Nahum Cabrera, manager of Lánzate, emphasised the severity of the attack: We are not talking about a simple graffiti, but a direct attack against diversity and coexistence in Lanzarote. The swastika is a symbol linked to extermination and hatred, and painting it on a bench that represents Pride is an act that hurts the whole of society, not just the LGBT+ community. At Lánzate, we reiterate that we will not take a single step back: in the face of hatred, we will not allow our social balance and our true Pride to be destroyed.”
