The newly constructed passenger terminal for cruise tourists was officially opened yesterday at two sites at Puerto Naos and Puerto de los Marmoles and is expected to significantly increase cruise traffic to the capital.

The Las Palmas Port Authority Ports of Las Palmas stated that “the new terminals are expected to receive more than one million passengers per year, generating a direct economic impact for local businesses.” Last year, the port of Arrecife received about 600,000 cruise passengers, but this year’s Q1 figures are already 25% higher than those for the first three months of last year.

The event was attended by Beatriz Calzada, President of the Las Palmas Port Authority and Mehmet Kutman, President and CEO of Global Ports Holding, who are the concessionaries of the port and invested more than €4 million in the infrastructure.  Representatives of the Spanish state, the Canarian Government, the Cabildo and Arrecife’s Mayor Yonathan de León were also present.

De León took the opportunity to request that the Las Palmas port authority invest in green areas at the port, pointing out that not a single tree existed in either port area.
