Nine people drowned on Lanzarote in 2024, with another 13 injured or rescued at sea, according to figures released yesterday by the safety association Canaries: 1500 Kms of Coast.
Of Lanzarote’s three resort areas, Tías suffered the worst figures, with five deaths in Puerto del Carmen: – three bathers and two scuba divers.
In Costa Teguise, one bather drowned at Playa de las Cucharas, while another death was registered on the Guacimeta beach in San Bartolomé. In Playa Blanca no deaths were recorded, but two bathers at Playa Dorada were injured.
In the Canaries as a whole, 67% of drownings happened to bathers, with at least a third of casualties being over 60 years of age.
