A meeting of Lanzarote’s Water Consortium has been called for this Thursday to resolve the matter of the contract with Canal Gestión.

The Consortium, composed of the island’s seven Mayors and the President of the Cabildo, will vote on a motion that the island’s agreement with Canal Gestion should be terminated due to breach of contract.

The consortium alleges that:

  • Promised investments of €54.4 million have not been carried.
  • Unilateral modifications have been made to investments and works that were not included in the investment bid.
  • Non-compliance with the operation plan has led to water losses exceeding 55%, way above the target of 30%
  • Serious service disruption has been reflected in continuous water all over the island

If the vote is passed, Canal Gestión will have ten days to respond before the process of awarding a new contract begins.

The vote is the latest sign of a serious breakdown in relations between Lanzarote’s authorities and its water supplier.
