The Playa Honda underpass will be operational in 2025, it was announced yesterday.

At a meeting of representatives from the Canarian government, Lanzarote’s Cabildo and San Bartolomé council yesterday it was announced that an environmental assessment has delayed the opening of the underpass until next year.

Canarian Public Works Minister Pablo Rodríguez said that the underpass “will not only improve the flow of traffic and reduce congestion at the roundabouts at the entrance to Playa Honda but will also promote pedestrian mobility through a new axis that connects Avenida del Mayor with the commercial area, regenerating spaces that are currently very congested.”

Rodríguez also stated that the plans to broaden the LZ-40 road to Puerto del Carmen had already been drafted, while those for the new LZ-5 road connecting Playa Honda and Arrecife were yet to be drawn up.

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort stated that, depending on the outcome of the Biosphere Reserve Council in autumn, the possibility existed that the Cabildo could oppose the LZ-5 project altogether.
