The problem of accommodating unaccompanied young migrants in the Canaries has caused a national political split in Spain.

After the Canarian Government pleaded for other Spanish regions to accept their share of underage migrants, Spain’s two main parties, the Socialists and the PP, agreed on a deal to relocate 400 young migrants on mainland Spain.

As a result, the far-right Vox party has withdrawn its support from five regional coalition agreements with the PP.

The Canary Islands have been complaining about lack of support from other regions for several months, claiming that accommodation centres for minors on the islands are “overflowing”. Recently, a large marquee has been erected in the Puerto Naos area to Arrecife to accommodate young migrants after a previous building they were housed in was found to be “unfit for human habitation”.
