San Bartolomé’s Mayor, Isidro Pérez, has announced that AENA, Spain’s airport authority, will not extend the territory occupied by Lanzarote’s airport, and that works will instead take place to unite Terminals 1 and 2.
The announcement followed a meeting of the Mayor with AENA’s director and puts paid to long-standing fears of ecologists and Matagorda residents that the airport runway might be extended into the sea.
Pérez said that a runway extension would “promote a model of greater growth” and described the decision to update the terminal buildings as “a more realistic model that fits the needs of the island.”
Pérez also announced that AENA had agreed to begin the process of assessing homes in Playa Honda for soundproofing.
