Lanzarote’s Cabildo has announced that it will “officially re-open” the Atlantic Museum in Playa Blanca, once again including it in the official tourist publicity for the island.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort made the announcement alongside sculptor Jason de Caires-Taylor (pictured above), who has been visiting the island. The underwater museum, featuring hundreds of life-size models located at depths of 12 to 15 metres, was opened in 2016.
However, the Museum was removed from the official list of tourist attractions in 2019 by the Socialist-led government, as part of a long political vendetta between the Coalición Canaria and the Socialist party.
Socialists have claimed that the museum was never closed under their rule, and that they actually removed the entrance fee to the installation. They claim that the Atlantic Museum was losing money heavily, and only attracting around 20 divers a day. They have also stated that the sculptures of de Caires Taylor do not reflect the artistic legacy of César Manrique.
