The Canarian heatwave continues, with temperatures of 37 degrees registered on the island of La Graciosa on Monday.
The heat has forced the Canarian Government to close schools until Monday, following episodes of fainting in some educational centres and requests from teachers, parents and unions.
The parents’ association of Costa Teguise’s instituto (secondary school) has called for the Canarian Government to allow working parents to stay at home when lessons are cancelled. They have also called for a report into why so many schools are unprepared for hot weather.
Maximum daytime temperatures between 32 and 35 degrees are forecast to continue until Sunday, although these are not quite high enough to require the issue of a weather warning. Minimum nighttime temperatures will not fall below the low 20s. Currently, AEMET, Spain’s weather agency, is predicting a slight fall in temperatures at the beginning of next week, and the possibility of rain on Tuesday 17th.
