Puerto Calero is Lanzarote’s youngest resort, a Blue Flag luxury sporting marina with a sleek, luxurious image and a unique character.
Puerto Calero was the dream of young businessman, José Calero. Born in La Asomada, and bearing a surname that reflects the traditional industry of his islands (a calero is a worker in the lime-kilns which provided ash for the soap industry in the 18th and 19th centuries), José left the island in the 1960s for Liberia.
Twenty years later, after setting up a number of successful businesses in Africa, he returned to Lanzarote and, at the age of 38, set about making a long-time dream come true. Two years later, the Puerto Calero leisure marina, with 198 moorings, opened.
A keen sailor, Calero launched the Canarian Sailing Circuit, a competition that operates between Lanzarote and Tenerife, and has won various prestigious sailing awards, as well as honours from Canarian authorities.
In almost 40 years of its existence, Puerto Calero has become an ever-more important tourist centre on the island. With two large hotels and an apartment complex, thousands of tourists choose the elegant port as their base of operations. While the resort has also become a residential area it remains compact and well-planned, without the sprawl that other places have witnessed.
