Spain’s President, Pedro Sánchez, has appointed new Tourism and Health ministers in a small cabinet reshuffle.
Reyes Maroto, who has held the post of Tourism and Industry Minister since Sánchez took power in 2019, will step down in order to stand for the post of Mayor of Madrid in May’s elections. She will be replaced by Tenerife politician Hector Gómez.
Carolina Darias, who took over the Health Ministry during the height of the second wave of the pandemic in 2021, is also stepping down to stand for Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. She will be replaced by José Manuel Miñones.
Less than nine months remain until Sánchez will be required to call a general election. His Socialist party is currently trailing the PP in opinion polls.
