Germany has once again become the second most important source for Lanzarote tourists after a year which saw a 21% fall in German tourism.
28,749 visitors arrived at Lanzarote airport from Germany in January, the second highest total after Britain, which accounted for 104,731. After a year in which Germany was ousted from its traditional second place by both domestic Spanish tourism and the Irish, the results suggest a return to normality for the German market, which was strongly affected by energy price rises last year.
Cabildo President María Dolores Corujo praised the German market earlier this week as the Berlin Tourism Fair got under way. “It’s important to work on diversifying the sector and developing markets such as the German one, which fit with our aim of appealing to better quality tourism that spends more money at destination”.
Although Corujo did not mention the British market, certain British newspapers have once again chosen to interpret her comments as anti-British, continuing the damaging publicity that resulted from false reports that Lanzarote planned to limit British tourists last month.
