Lanzarote’s water utility, Canal Gestion, has appealed to citizens to stop flushing solid waste, such as wet wipes and cotton buds, down their toilets.

To mark World Sanitation Day, the company claimed that 300,000 kilos of solid waste a year – mostly formed by used wet wipes – is removed from sewage at the processing centre near Arrecife. They also have to attend at least 90 call-outs a month to remove blockages resulting from solid waste

Discarded solid waste is the main reason for floods that occur following heavy rainfall and, as wet wipes are made of non-biodegradable materials, they remain in the system indefinitely.

Canal Gestion has reminded citizens to dispose of used wet-wipes, cotton buds, cigarette ends, bandages and dressings along with with solid waste, and not to flush them down the toilet.
