International Day of Rural Women celebrates millions of women living in rural areas and celebrates their achievements and contribution in local agriculture.
Last Saturday, October 15th, the Cabildo held an event to pay tribute to six outstanding women on Lanzarote at the Monumento al Campesino.
The Cabildo President, María Dolores Corujo, was accompanied by the local mayors who presented awards to the women. Those honoured by the Cabildo were Teodomira Socas Perdomo, from Haría; Esperanza Machín Tejera, from San Bartolomé; Lourdes Clavijo Abreut, from Teguise; Isabel Delgado Betancor, from Tías; Josefina Martín, from Tinajo, and Vicenta Bravo Marrero, from Yaiza.
Corujo welcomed the women to the stage, congratulated them, and stated “Much of what we have built in Lanzarote we owe to the people of the countryside and especially to the women who were pioneers in these jobs and who played a vital role in the growth of the island.”.
“That is why we give recognition to six women from six different municipalities for their historical work in an area traditionally associated with men and for the sacrifice made over the years to make Lanzarote the modern, rich and sustainable island we know today”, she added.
The Cabildo’s Councillor for the Primary Sector, Andrés Stinga, congratulated the women and highlighted that “they are an example for the new generations, demonstrating the importance of continuing to promote the rural environment for the economy and development of Lanzarote.”.
“We need women like these to continue spreading rural traditions. We have great natural wealth that we must take advantage of, and the female collective must be the protagonist”, she concluded.
