The Cabildo has released a statement on social media after thousands of kilos of potatoes and sweet potatoes have been reported as stolen by local farmers.

If local farmers on Lanzarote aren’t already struggling with frequent water shortages, this new robbery adds to their list of problems.

Thousands of kilos of potatoes and sweet potatoes have been stolen from farms on the island by persons unknown at the time of writing.

The Cabildo have appealed to the public in a statement on social media asking for residents to spread the word and come forward with any information they might have regarding the recent theft.

In the statement the Cabildo wrote:

“Today it pains us to share that our farmers are victims of devastating thefts. Thousands of kilos of potatoes and sweet potatoes have been stolen from their daily efforts. This not only affects the crops, but also the families who depend on them!

We ask the community to unite against this injustice and denounce. We are not only losing crops, but we are also losing our way of life!

Help us spread the word! Share this message, join the conversation with the hashtag #LanzaroteAgriculturaSegura and stay alert. Together we are stronger!

We call for unity and solidarity. Let’s not allow the work of our farmers to be ruined by a few who seek to destroy our agricultural community and let’s alert the police of each municipality.”
