With 13 matches played Los Rojillos (the reds) have yet to taste defeat and are in third position, two points off top spot in the national Tercera division (fifth tier.) Ian lane reports.
In their last three home matches Lanzarote have dropped points with two draws but their away form has been nothing short of spectacular.
On the 3rd December the Rojillos travelled to Playas de las Americas in Tenerife to face CD Marino. After only five minutes Lanzarote were a goal down but this was a blessing in disguise as the Rojillos tore their opponents apart and were 1-4 up at the break.
The Rojillos leading scorer Di Renzo scored the fifth and his hat trick early in the second half as Lanzarote went onto to record their biggest away win ever 2-7.
Last season Di Renzo was the league’s top scorer with 18 goals and this season he is bang on course to improve on that with 11 goals already, with four matches remaining to reach the halfway point of the season. Our number 9 is a tremendous talent and we all have the opportunity to see his skills every other Sunday in Arrecife.
Another player who is emerging into a crowd favourite is attacking midfielder León Gomez.
The 21 year old Argentine arrived in Lanzarote on a 2-year contract from the B team of giants River Plate. Our number 22 has already played in the second tier of Argentine football and has settled quickly into life in Lanzarote and has scored four goals in his last seven outings.
From a dead ball situation and as a playmaker this lad is way beyond his years. If he can keep level-headed – and all the signs are there that he can -he will have a tremendous future in professional football.
It is simple to watch a match. If you are coming from Puerto Del Carmen or Costa Teguise jump on the bus number 3 which will drop you almost outside the stadium in Arrecife and goes back and forth every 30 minutes. From Playa Blanca you need bus no 60 which leaves at 09.55 and returns 2,3 and 4pm. Pay on the door on match day. Refreshments and merchandise available inside the stadium only on match days.
