The Canarian Government has raised the income threshold at which families can qualify for financial assistance to buy schoolbooks and educational material for the new school year.

This year, families with two to four children that earn under €18,000 a year will be able to apply for the subsidies. The previous threshold was €16,675. The threshold will rise by €1,600 for every extra family member.

School books are not free in Spain, and families face a heavy bill when children return to school. (This also explains why Spanish children often look as though they’re tackling Mount Everest, with heavy rucksacks, because books have to be taken to and from school each day).

Last year, almost 75,000 grants were distributed for textbooks. The revision of all textbooks to comply with a newSpanish educational law means that the bill for textbooks is likely to be high this year.

Interested parents should enquire about the grants at their children’s educational establishment.
