Renewables Report Prioritises Rooftops, Brownfield Sites and Quarries for Solar Energy

The Cabildo’s report on renewable energies has been completed and distributed to Lanzarote’s seven councils, who will have three weeks to raise objections and suggest amendments.

The report proposes that 200 hectares of the island’s territory be dedicated to solar and wind power, a huge reduction on the 3,100 hectares that was originally proposes by the Canarian Government.

The report recommends that solar panels should be located on rooftops, as well as in “obsolete, incomplete, and other degraded areas”. Ideally, these should be installed near to areas of high consumption.

These areas include the zone of Las Caletas near Costa Teguise, and Maneje in northern Arrecife.

Other areas suggested for development include a plot next of the airport and another near the prison in Tahiche. Two areas in exhausted land at quarries in Tías and Montaña Blanca are alos included in the proposal.

No new wind turbines are suggested in the report, which instead proposes the renovation and improvement of existing wind farms.
