A new island-wide political party has been officially registered and is likely to present candidates for the Cabildo elections in May next year.

Juntos Por Lanzarote (Together For Lanzarote) is initially formed by three parties – Unidos Por Yaiza, led by Yaiza’s current Mayor Óscar Noda; Marea Viva, led by the veteran Tías campaigner Jéronimo Robayna; and Primero Teguise, led by Victor Sanz.

These individual parties will continue to exist under their own names in their council areas but will form a united front in the elections for the island government. The party is currently sounding out further alliances with other local formations.

It is the first Lanzarote-wide party to exist since the PIL, which enjoyed huge success in the 1990s before collapsing amid corruption scandals around fifteen years ago.
