Puerto del Carmen was buzzing with excitement yesterday as the island officially launched the 34th edition of the IRONMAN Lanzarote 2026. The event, held in the heart of the coastal resort, reaffirmed Lanzarote’s reputation as a global leader in long distance triathlon.

As tradition dictates, the world’s finest professional and amateur athletes will gather to tackle the legendary course: a 3.8-kilometre swim, a 180.2-kilometre bike ride, and a 42.2-kilometre run. The race, the oldest on the IRONMAN circuit in Europe, continues to draw competitors from across the globe.

Top island officials attended the launch, where they underlined the social, economic and promotional impact that the event has on Lanzarote.

Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Lanzarote Cabildo, closed the proceedings by reflecting on the race’s enduring legacy. “IRONMAN is part of our history, because I’m sure we all have childhood memories tied to it, and together we’ve helped make this event even greater,” said Betancort. He also highlighted the new Walk of Champions surrounding the statue of Kenneth Gasque and expressed his deep gratitude to Club La Santa for all the editions organised by the sports resort.

One of the day’s most memorable moments came at the end of the speeches, with the unveiling of commemorative plaques honouring all the winners of Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote. This new recognition space pays tribute to everyone who has left their mark on the event throughout its more than three decades of history, cementing its legacy deep within the island’s DNA.
