Lanzarote’s Cabildo has announced that it present a proposal for Renewable Energy Acceleration Zones to the island’s seven councils before submitting it to the Canarian Government. The proposal reduces the area that the regional government originally planned for the zones from over 3,000 hectares to less than 200.
The Cabildo’s proposal concentrates future renewable facilities on the roofs of public buildings, parking lots, infrastructure, and degraded land.
A park of solar panels is also envisaged near Tahíche prison, where energy will be primarily allocated to water production and distribution.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said “Lanzarote advocates for the energy transition to be carried out according to its own criteria, concentrating facilities in places where they cause the least possible impact and ensuring that this transformation benefits its citizens.”
The Canarian Government withdrew its original maps for proposed zones a month ago, following opposition by the Cabildo.
